Southern Electric began supplying energy to homes in England in 1947. In 1998 it merged with Scottish Hydro and became known as Scottish and Southern Electric (SSE) and has since acquired the SWALEC brand in Wales and Airtricity in Ireland.
Today SSE is one of the "Big Six" Energy suppliers in the UK. They currently supply more than 8 million domestic energy customers throughout Britain. SSE is also the UK largest generator of renewable energy. This includes over 1450MW of hydro generation and 840MW of wind capacity and they currently have more onshore and offshore wind farms under development.
