Scottish and Southern Energy

In 1998 Scottish Hydro-Electric and Southern Electric merged to form Scottish and Southern Energy.


Today Scottish and Southern Energy are one of the largest energy suppliers in the UK with four separate brands, Southern Electric, SWALEC, Scottish Hydro-Electric and most recently Atlantic Electric and Gas.


Scottish and Southern Energy has recently, in December 2008, reached the nine million customer mark. This comprises 5.53 million electricity customers and 3.47 million gas customers.


With its main base in Perth Scottish and Southern Energy has offices based around the UK and provides a local presence to its acquired customer base.


Scottish and Southern Energy is a vertically integrated utility company in that they own not just the supply side of the business but in Scotland also the distribution side of the business and throughout the UK a number of strategically placed generation plants.

Gas Networks

Scotia Gas Networks (SGN) is the holding company of Scotland Gas Networks and Southern Gas Networks. It is owned by a consortium made up of Scottish and Southern Energy (50%), Borealis Infrastructure Management Inc (25%) and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board (25%).SGN operates two of the largest of eight regional gas distribution networks in Britain. Its primary focus is on delivering gas to its 5.6 million customers safely, reliably and efficiently

Gas Storage

Scottish and Southern Energy Gas Storage own and operate the UK's largest onshore gas storage facility at Hornsea in East Yorkshire. Nine man-made salt cavities have been leached into a salt layer 1.8 kilometres below the surface creating 325 million cubic metres of gas storage space.Gas can be withdrawn at a rate of 18 million cubic metres per day, equivalent to the requirements of around four million homes.


SSE Pipelines

SSE Pipelines is a licensed public gas transporter, which is fully equipped to install, own and operate the gas infrastructure on new housing and commercial developments throughout the UK.
